ServiceNow and OpenAI have introduced a plugin that lets IT teams investigate incidents, assess change risk and update ServiceNow records from within ChatGPT. Announced on October 28, the integration gives employees a conversational way to carry out operational tasks while ServiceNow applies the organization’s business rules and permissions.
The ServiceNow MCP plugin is available in the OpenAI marketplace. Additional interactive features, application development tools, cybersecurity capabilities and voice functionality have separate release schedules extending into 2027.

ServiceNow Controls the Actions Taken Through ChatGPT
According to OpenAI, customers connect ChatGPT to their own ServiceNow instance and select which capabilities to expose. ServiceNow Action Fabric applies the existing rules and access permissions that determine what a user can do. ServiceNow remains responsible for executing and governing those actions.
For an IT service team, the integration could keep related investigation and record updates within one conversation. A team member can look for comparable incidents, evaluate a proposed change and update the relevant record, subject to the organization’s configuration.
This makes the choice of exposed capabilities an important implementation decision. Teams will need to decide which workflows employees should access through ChatGPT and how existing permissions map to those tasks.
ServiceNow is also previewing richer interactions. One scenario involves an on-call engineer examining connected alerts, recent changes and affected services before coordinating a response and updating an incident. Enhanced plugin capabilities are expected by the end of 2026.
Development, Security and Voice Follow Separate Timelines
The companies plan to integrate Codex into ServiceNow’s AI Workflow Factory during 2027, supporting application development using ServiceNow’s business context and platform capabilities. OpenAI models are also intended to power Build Agent and Autonomous Engineer.
A planned joint security solution will combine OpenAI’s cybersecurity capabilities with ServiceNow’s enterprise context to support vulnerability investigation, risk prioritization and remediation. Early access is expected in January 2027, with general availability planned for the second quarter.
Voice capabilities in ServiceNow’s Super Intelligence Control Tower are expected in the first quarter of 2027. The proposed experience would let users describe an AI use case aloud, populate assessment fields and answer follow-up questions where information is missing.
The announcements do not provide customer outcome measurements for the new ChatGPT integration or detail its pricing and licensing requirements.
