Oracle Releases First PeopleSoft Middleware DPK for Security Patching

Oracle has released its first PeopleSoft Middleware Deployment Package (DPK), putting the replacement for Infrastructure DPK into use for the October security update cycle. PeopleSoft administrators can download Oracle’s package or build one themselves to fit their maintenance schedules.

In its October 30 announcement, Oracle said the first package had been released earlier that week. The company also delivered an update for Cloud Manager Image 22 to support the transition.

Oracle’s first PeopleSoft Middleware DPK replaces Infrastructure DPK for security updates, with a Builder option and support for Cloud Manager Image 22.

More control over patch timing

The Middleware DPK changes how customers obtain and package middleware security updates. Oracle explained in its August transition announcement that the underlying process for applying those patches to existing environments remains the same.

Customers can continue downloading a package prepared and validated by Oracle from My Oracle Support. Alternatively, the Middleware DPK Builder downloads available middleware patches and assembles a ZIP file for customers to deploy through the established DPK process. Supported components include Java, WebLogic, Tuxedo, Oracle Database Client, and OPatch.

That choice addresses a scheduling problem Oracle encountered during the October cycle. According to PeopleTools Strategy Director Dan Iverson, three Java patch releases arrived between Patch Tuesday and publication of the first Middleware DPK. Each required Oracle to rebuild and validate its package.

Using the Builder allows customers to prepare a package before Oracle publishes its rebuilt version. Oracle says customers must still test the resulting package in their own environments before production deployment.

Requirements depend on the PeopleTools patch level

The release follows Oracle’s August 26 transition announcement and the October 9 publication of enablement patches. The newly available package makes that previously announced transition operational.

Oracle’s enablement guidance identifies the following requirements for Windows and Linux environments:

  • PeopleTools 8.61.23 and earlier require enablement patch 40124711.
  • PeopleTools 8.62.13 and earlier require enablement patch 40124744.
  • PeopleTools 8.61.24 and later, 8.62.14 and later, and 8.63 already include Middleware DPK support and the Builder.

The enablement patch updates the PeopleTools DPK directory and supplies the Builder. It does not change the installed PeopleTools release level or apply middleware security fixes. Administrators use the --apply_mw_cpu option to apply the security package after enablement.

Oracle’s published support scope covers PeopleTools 8.61 through 8.63 on Windows and Linux. The company says there is no Middleware DPK replacement for Infrastructure DPK on Oracle Solaris or IBM AIX.

Cloud Manager receives transition support

The new PRP for Cloud Manager Image 22 enables Middleware DPK use within Cloud Manager and adds support for applying the enablement patch to managed environments. Oracle advises Cloud Manager customers to apply that PRP as part of the transition.
